Australians, let us all rejoice
Australia or Invasion Day?
January 26 marks the arrival of the First Fleet on Australian shores. For millions of Anglo- Australians, it’s a day for celebrating the arrival of their ancestors.
But not for all Australians.
For the original Australians, January 26 is not a day of celebrating anything. It has taken Australia centuries even to recognise this.
NAIDOC week is now Australia’s celebration of Aboriginal history, culture and achievements. There are similar celebrations of equally worthy cultures in multicultural nations like Singapore.
In Singapore, public holidays mark the celebrations of Singaporean, Chinese, Indian and English cultures equally.
Perhaps it’s time that the Federal government marked the existence of the world’s oldest culture with a public holiday to encourage Australians to acknowledge, and show respect, for our original Australians.
And perhaps January 26 should be called First Fleet Day.
